What are release agents?
Release agents are innovative solutions that prevent adhesion between two materials. In other words, it is a physical-chemical barrier that facilitates the separation between a model, or mold, and the produced part.
What kind of release agents are there?
Release agents can be classified according to how many mold releases can be made before being reapplied (whether they are permanent or semi-permanent). They can also be classified by their formulation (water-based or solvent-based). The choice will depend on the manufacturer's requirements, the substrate you use, and your quality results.
What are the differences between a water-based and solvent-based release agent?
Water-based mold releases are a much less harmful technology for workers, since solvent-based mold releases contain Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), which negatively impact the health of operators.
What causes VOC?
VOC can cause various health effects due to their chemical nature. In the short term these effects may include irritation of the eyes, throat or nose, headaches, loss of coordination and nausea, while long-term effects include damage to the liver, kidney, and central nervous system damage. Signs and symptoms associated with VOC exposure may include headaches, allergic skin reactions.
Are water-based release agents more difficult to use?
Performance-wise there are only a few differences in sight, with some training, everyone can switch from one technology to another in a few hours. In both cases, an over-application will result in an unwanted interaction causing, such as low-quality parts, high residue accumulation on the mold and incompatibility with the subsequent process, gluing or painting.
